The Concept and the Role of the Model in Mathematics and Natural and Social Sciences. [REVIEW]D. P. R. - 1962 - Review of Metaphysics 15 (4):682-682.
A collection of papers delivered at a colloquium in 1960. Most are quite brief; all are at a rather high level of technical sophistication. Of general interest are L. Apostel's "Toward the Formal Study of Models in the Non-Formal Sciences," which concludes that a unique definition of models in terms of their function should be the basis for a general description of this "multiform concept"; H. Freudenthal's discussion of "models in Applied Probability"; a historical treatment of "Model and Insight" by (...)

    The Three Worlds of Man. [REVIEW]D. P. R. - 1963 - Review of Metaphysics 17 (2):301-301.
The general topic is morality, divided into three notions, Action, Wisdom and Grace. The lectures are lively historical reflections on these notions seen in the context of Greek thought, especially that of Plato and Aristotle.--R. D. P.

A summary of these three philosophers on the subjects of the limitation of rational-conceptual knowledge and of the necessity for what the author calls "supra-rational" knowledge. Pascal is used as a standard for the other two, due to his full commitment to suprarational knowledge in the Christian revelation.--R. D. P.

    Relativism and the Study of Man. [REVIEW]D. P. R. - 1962 - Review of Metaphysics 15 (3):532-532.
Twelve essays from a symposium concerned with the influence of relativistic concepts on the development of the social sciences. There is general agreement that methodological relativism, though often appropriate to scientific inquiry, has lead to a normative relativism which is inappropriate to the study of man.--R. D. P.

    A randomized trial of ethics education for medical house officers.D. P. Sulmasy, G. Geller, D. M. Levine & R. R. Faden - 1993 - Journal of Medical Ethics 19 (3):157-163.
We report the results of a randomized trial to assess the impact of an innovative ethics curriculum on the knowledge and confidence of 85 medical house officers in a university hospital programme, as well as their responses to a simulated clinical case. Twenty-five per cent of the house officers received a lecture series, 25 per cent received lectures and case conferences, with an ethicist in attendance, and 50 per cent served as controls. A post-intervention questionnaire was administered. Knowledge scores did (...)

In 1885, during initial discussions of J. C. Maxwell's celebrated thermodynamic demon, Whiting (1) observed that the demon-like velocity selection of molecules can occur in a gravitationally bound gas. Recently, a gravitational Maxwell demon has been proposed which makes use of this observation [D. P. Sheehan, J. Glick, and J. D. Means, Found. Phys. 30, 1227 (2000)]. Here we report on numerical simulations that detail its microscopic phase space structure. Results verify the previously hypothesized mechanism of its paradoxical behavior. This (...)

A laboratory-testable, solid-state Maxwell demon is proposed that utilizes the electric field energy of an open-gap p-n junction. Numerical results from a commercial semiconductor device simulator (Silvaco International–Atlas) verify primary results from a 1-D analytic model. Present day fabrication techniques appear adequate for laboratory tests of principle.

Initial responses to questionnaires used to assess participants' understanding of informed consent for malaria vaccine trials conducted in the United States and Mali were tallied. Total scores were analyzed by age, sex, literacy (if known), and location. Ninety-two percent (92%) of answers by United States participants and 85% of answers by Malian participants were correct. Questions more likely to be answered incorrectly in Mali related to risk, and to the type of vaccine. For adult participants, independent predictors of higher scores (...)

Purpose: Physicians are often reluctant to discuss “Do Not Resuscitate” orders with patients. Although perceived self-efficacy is a known prerequisite for behavioural change, little is understood about the confidence of physicians regarding DNR discussions.Subjects and methods: A survey of 217 internal medicine attendings and 132 housestaff at two teaching hospitals about their attitudes and confidence regarding DNR discussions. Results: Participants were significantly less confident about their ability to discuss DNR orders than to discuss consent for medical procedures , and this was (...)

    Immaculateness and Research Practice.D. P. Dash, Héctor R. Ponce & Gerard de Zeeuw - 2006 - Journal of Research Practice 2 (1):Article E1.
Notions of purity, perfection, or immaculateness have powered our imagination over the ages. Various images of perfection have held sway in their hallowed times, providing secure streams for channelling human energy. Unfortunately, with the unfolding of the human drama on the world stage, all the images of perfection have suffered damage, epoch on epoch. Different responses have emerged to attempt a restoration. Revival of some of the old images is one such response. Production of new images to serve as worthwhile (...)

This study represents an improvement in the ethics scales inventory published in a 1988 Journal of Business Ethics article. The article presents the distillation and validation process whereby the original 33 item inventory was reduced to eight items. These eight items comprise the following ethical dimensions: a moral equity dimension, a relativism dimension, and a contractualism dimension. The multidimensional ethics scale demonstrates significant predictive ability.

The DAMA project is an observatory for rare processes and it is operative deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the I.N.F.N. In particular, the DAMA/LIBRA (Large sodium Iodide Bulk for RAre processes) set-up consists of highly radiopure NaI(Tl) detectors for a total sensitive exposed mass of ≃250 kg. Recent results, obtained by this set-up by exploiting the model independent annual modulation signature of Dark Matter (DM) particles, have confirmed and improved those obtained by the former DAMA/NaI experiment.
